HX Expeditions

Pioneering a New Era of Sustainable Expeditions

At HX, our commitment goes beyond minimizing our environmental footprint; we actively strive to leave a lasting positive impact on the people, communities, and natural environments we encounter. Anchored by three strategic pillars Emissions, Nature, and Communities we aim to lead the expedition cruise travel industry with transparent and ambitious ESG goals backed up by consistent delivery. We were the first to ban Heavy Fuel Oils in 2008, the first to ban unnecessary single-use plastic in 2018, and the first to launch hybrid-battery expedition ships in 2019. From our Science & Education program which supports groundbreaking scientific research to empowering local communities and safeguarding biodiversity, HX continuously innovates to drive meaningful change and set new standards.

Emissions: Reducing Our Climate Impact

HX is actively moving towards lower emissions through advanced technologies and proactive operational changes. Our award-winning hybrid expedition ships MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen are at the forefront, substantially cutting emissions with battery power combined with biofuel-ready engines. Additionally, our fleet leverages renewable shore power in ports like Iceland and Norway, significantly reducing emissions when docked. Initiatives such as these support our delivery of carbon neutrality for Scope 1 emissions by 2040 and highlight our dedicated progress towards the long-term goal of net zero voyages by 2050.

Nature: Championing Science and Biodiversity

Our commitment to biodiversity and environmental restoration is demonstrated through our industry-leading Science & Education program. In 2024, HX provided over 1,900 nights aboard our ships for guest scientists researching everything from whale population health to microplastics. We are also helping to restore Ecuador’s Chocó Andino cloud forest, a critical biodiversity hotspot through our partnership with the Fundación Futuro. Through this partnership, we've successfully restored over 600 acres by sequestering carbon, creating vital wildlife corridors, and fostering ecosystem resilience. All of this supports our dedication to supporting the global goal of nature-positive by 2030.

Communities: Investing in People

Community engagement is fundamental to the delivery of our amazing expeditions. Our charity, the HX Foundation, provides targeted financial support for essential local and environmental projects globally with over 400,000 euros donated in 2024 to over 18 different countries. Our award-winning Rapid Response Fund enables our on-ship teams to disburse money immediately to address local need from educational supplies in Colombia to shoes for a wrestling club in Cambridge Bay, Canada. In our own teams, we are committed to authentic representation and are the first expedition cruise company to directly hire product team members from the communities we visit. These efforts demonstrate our genuine respect and commitment to empowering local cultures, ensuring our impact is always positive and long lasting.
