Tourist Office of Spain (Turespaña)
A Champion of Responsible Travel

Spain’s Commitment to Sustainability
Turespaña is Spain’s national tourism agency, promoting the country as a sustainable, high-quality and inclusive destination. Aligned with Spain’s Sustainable Tourism Strategy 2030, we champion responsible travel that protects heritage, empowers communities and enhances visitor experiences. Spain offers 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 16 national parks and the largest carbon-neutral high-speed rail network in Europe. With over $2.2 billion invested in green transition and cultural preservation, Spain is reimagining tourism for future generations. From eco-certified lodgings to rural tourism and accessible cities, Spain welcomes travelers to discover its diversity — with a commitment to sustainability at the heart of every journey.
Sustainable Food & Wine Tourism
Spain is redefining culinary travel through sustainability. Across the country, restaurants recognized with Michelin Green Stars and Repsol’s Sustainable Suns are leading the way with local sourcing, energy efficiency and zero-waste practices. Initiatives like QonAlma and the Sustainable Restaurants Foundation connect food with community and environmental values. Meanwhile, Spain’s Wine Routes offer immersive, eco-conscious experiences — from cycling through vineyards in Ribera del Duero and tasting organic and vegan wines in La Mancha to enjoying wine therapy and e-bike tours in La Rioja Alavesa. With over 100 PDO wine regions and centuries-old culinary traditions, Spain invites travelers to explore its rich food and wine culture — where a focus on sustainability enhances every bite and sip!
The Lesser-Known Spain
Take an atypical path through Spain and discover La España menos conocida (the lesser-known Spain) — a tapestry of lesser-explored regions full of natural beauty, deep-rooted traditions and meaningful experiences. In these corners of the country, sustainable travel flourishes through community-based tourism, local gastronomy and cultural preservation. Walk the cobbled streets of Soria and Burgos, explore the lush valleys of Liébana or admire the volcanic landscapes of La Garrotxa. Experience the remote charm of Las Hurdes in Extremadura, the olive-covered hills of Jaén, or the whitewashed villages scattered across Andalusia’s inland sierras. These destinations invite travelers to slow down, connect with local life and explore Spain through a lens of authenticity and respect.
Sustainable Mobility Across Spain
Spain is committed to smart, low-emission transportation that connects the country efficiently and responsibly. The train, the least polluting form of mass transit, is central to this model —Spain boasts the second-largest high-speed rail network in the world, spanning over 2,485 miles. In addition, Spain promotes accessible eco-friendly routes like the Vías Verdes, such as the Laciana Greenway in León, which repurpose former railway lines for sustainable mobility.
In cities, travelers can opt for electric bikes and scooters or explore electric car routes supported by apps like Electromaps and initiatives such as e-Basque Route. Walking is encouraged through urban projects like Metrominuto, while low-emission zones and clean public transport are becoming widespread. Whether by rail, foot or e-mobility, Spain offers increasingly seamless, sustainable travel options across the country
